About

International River protects rivers and defends the rights of communities that depend on them. With offices in four continents, International Rivers works to stop destructive dams, improve decision-making processes in the water and energy sectors, and promote water and energy solutions for a just and sustainable world.

Since 1985, International Rivers has been at the heart of the global struggle to protect rivers and the rights of communities that depend on them.

We work with an international network of dam-affected people, grassroots organizations, environmentalists, human rights advocates and others who are committed to stopping destructive river projects and promoting better options.

We seek a world where healthy rivers and the rights of local communities are valued and protected. We envision a world where water and energy needs are met without degrading nature or increasing poverty, and where people have the right to participate in decisions that affect their lives.

Our China Program

International Rivers has been working to protect the world’s rivers and the communities that depend on them for 30 years. In China, we aim to protect healthy rivers so that future generations can also benefit from them. We also aim to protect local people’s rights to shared prosperity within their own culture. Our work is driven by a dedication to research, guided by strong analysis, and devoted to passionate advocacy.

Chinese companies and Chinese banks are now the biggest builders and financiers of global dam building. Chinese banks and companies are involved in some 330 dams in 74 different countries, particularly in Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.

As a result China has a growing and significant global environmental footprint. Many dams built by China overseas are done so without reference to international environmental and social standards. Information and data is also difficult to obtain given the lack of transparency around Chinese overseas.

International Rivers' China program provides information about China's role in global dam building, supports groups in countries affected by Chinese dams, and fosters a dialogue within China about the responsibilities of Chinese dam builders.

International Rivers works with its partners to communicate the experiences of the international movement for "people, water, and life" to new dam financiers and dam builders in China.
